In mid August, announcements about planned changes to New Zealand’s building law, which indicated an initial proposal to do some reforms to the current Building Act, were made by the Minister of Building and Housing, Maurice Williamson. You can read more about what’s been announced and where to next on other sites.
It is good to see that a number of the issues that are important to us as architects will be addressed, however the time frame for reform to the Act – and any more substantive legislative change that might follow as a result of proposed changes – is a long one.
Just before this announcement was made the Minister communicated directly with the Institute about our submissions, outlining the changes that were released publicly – and said he had requested the Department of Building and Housing work with us on matters around the Building Act.
We’ve now had an initial meeting, which gave us the opportunity to gauge the DBH’s thoughts on the key issues we’d outlined. Again, there was a lot of common ground on the most important issues and the discussion was very positive. There’s more information about how this ongoing debate will progress here.

Adding up
Former Wellington architect Ross Brown, now working with Cook Sargisson & Pirie in Auckland, has just completed a building triple bill for himself... as architect, client and developer. Brown has won many awards for his work, including an NZIA National Award for the Colonial Mutual, Wellington.
